Camp Soni Springs was purchased by the Northern Indiana Girl Scout Council
in 1959 and is located in Berrien County approximately four miles southwest of Three Oaks MI. The name Soni is an acronym for Scouts of Northern Indiana, the Girl Scout council that founded the camp. Camp Soni Springs has 156 acres including 72 acres of open land and 84 wooded acres. A branch of the Little Galien River runs through the camp. A small artificially made lake, Lake Mary, on the property is perfect for swimming and small craft, especially for younger girls as it is well protected from wind. One unique feature of the camp is the small island, called Skippers Island with a Tree House that overlooks the lake. In 2009, Soni was idled as Girl Scouts of Northern Indiana-Michiana initiated plans to study all properties owned by the newly merged council. In 2010, the decision was made to retain this property as a day and troop camp for the girls and volunteers on the western edge of the council. Plans are currently underway to rejuvenate and reopen this beautiful property.
Because Camp Soni Springs is in the State of Michigan, some Girl Scout groups must follow special rules with they go to camp there. To find out if your GSNI-M group must follow these rules, ask yourself this question, "Will there be any girls in attendance without their parent or guardian?". If the answer is no, you should just follow regular GSNI-M policies and procedures. If the answer is Yes, then you need to follow the Camp Soni Springs policies and procedure. The first thing you need to know is you need one person with your group who is an "Approved Camp Soni Springs Director". If you'd like to become one, please watch the training schedule for the next training. Approved Camp Soni Springs Directors, please click here for the current Camp Soni Springs Director files.
At Camp Soni Springs, a multi-purpose building will be constructed to serve as the hub for camp operations as well as being a resource for the volunteers and girls on the west side of our council. Conceptual programming for this building has it including a large general purpose room (100 people) that will be directly connected to a covered pavilion for another 100 people. The building will also include a small commercial kitchen, trading post, health center, an office/admin area and will serve as a storm shelter for Soni. Sleeping accommodations will be mattress sleeping on the floor for girls and adult volunteers. A conceptual floor plan and elevation of the proposed building is below.
Since we are at the very beginning of the planning process for this building, we would love input from volunteers, especially those that are familiar with Soni Springs. All suggestions and recommendations should be sent directly to firstname.lastname@example.org. Chris is the Director of Properties and Information Technology and will be responsible for the overall management of this project. We are very excited about this project and plan to create a place on our website to display pictures of the construction as it is taking place.
